How can Tarrant county fix reading crisis when its leaders don’t seem to understand it?
Reading Crisis: Reading scores have been alarmingly low, with only 30% of third-graders reading at grade level for over a decade. This issue persists through eighth grade, where the gap between district and state average scores widens significantly.

Eighth graders are significantly behind: The latest NWEA data shows that eighth graders are a full school year behind pre-pandemic levels in math and reading, indicating that federal recovery efforts have not been sufficient to address learning loss from COVID-19 disruptions.
Challenges with recovery funding: With federal COVID relief funds set to expire soon, schools face the challenge of sustaining recovery programs. The flexibility in how districts used the funds resulted in inconsistent impacts, and many are now eliminating crucial staff and programs.
